When a Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is performed, a cell is removed from the embryo (biopsy) in order to examine its DNA to find potential genetic diseases. It allows for the selection of healthy embryos to be transferred to the uterus of the gestational surrogate, and the subsequent birth of a child who is free from genetic diseases or abnormalities.
