Hello, my husband and I are considering surrogacy due to Rokitansky syndrome and someone told us about surrogacy… We’re Catholic and are not very comfortable with this infertility treatment thing, but we can’t stand not having children in our lives… So we’ve decided to turn a blind eye to it and want to learn more about this surrogacy technique, what can you tell us? A brief summary would be ok. Thnks!

  2. Dear justine & taylor,

Gestational surrogacy or GS is done with a technique called in vitro fertilization (IVF), which makes it possible for a woman to transfer eggs to another woman (the gestational carrier), who will carry the pregnancy to term. The eggs are fertilized using the husband’s sperm and the resulting embryo is placed into the uterus of the gestational carrier or surrogate. So, in short, the gestational carrier is the woman who will carry the baby until birth, and she will be the birth mother of the child. She has no genetic link to the child.

  3. Hello dear, I hope you are fine. Infertility is the worst ever problem occurred in women. Not only women but also in men. But now its good that infertility treatments have been invented. Many people have tried this thing. They all are happy with the result. Surrogacy is one of them. Surrogacy is really a great treatment. In this process, the sperm of men is collected. And the eggs of women is collected. Both these things are fused in the lab to create the Embryos. One to three embryos are put into the third woman, known as Surrogate mother. After nine months she gave birth to the baby. And she handed over the baby to the intended parents. So there is nothing bad in this process. You should really try it. Now the choice is yours. I hope it will help you out.

  4. Hey, Justine and Taylor, I hope you are well. Surrogacy is a process that has helped many couples in finally becoming parents. It is, however, a lengthy process and takes time. The first initial step is to get in touch with a doctor clinic or agency for help. They will go through your case and then help you out. Certain clinics have certain requirements make sure to read those. The procedure is very simple. When you will sign up with a clinic they will match you a surrogate. Once that is done they will place the embryos form from your egg and the sperm or the donors into the uterus of the surrogate. After this, the process will start. In about 11 days maximum the clinic will inform you if she got pregnant or not. After this it will be all about the wait. You will be visiting the doctor with the surrogate. This way you will equally be part of the pregnancy. Good luck to you.

    • Just a thing to share. Parents at risk of passing on a genetic disorder are faced with heartbreaking implications of potentially creating a life with an inherited illness. Common embryo testing procedures require months of laboratory work. But the latest tool, known as karyomapping, can be completed within two weeks. Meaning a couple can undergo tests without breaking from their IVF treatment cycle. The test also checks embryos have the right number of chromosomes, a common cause of miscarriage and developmental disorders such as Down’s syndrome. Because embryos are tested before they are implanted, the parents do not face decisions about terminating the pregnancy later on..Be wise.

  8. Hey! I am so sorry you have to go through infertility. It is very depressing. It kills your energy and motivation. I have been TTC for 10 years. I was expecting to have a baby every time I got my periods delayed. But it never happened. I was shattered each time. I had a countless emotional breakdown. I was even ready to give up on life. However, my husband took me to a clinic in Europe. They were offering surrogacy at very reasonable rates. I found them at the right time. I am so grateful. Their service is very reasonable and good.

  11. Hi there,
It is sad that you can’t carry your baby yourself. Adoption and surrogacy are the two options you can choose. Surrogacy is a bit expensive than adoption of course but the plus point is that you can have a baby which is genetically yours so it will be easier to relate and make a bond. If you think you can ignore the norms and beliefs for the joys of parenthood then surrogacy can do wonders for you. The gestational surrogacy works with IVF. It means that an egg from you and a sperm from your husband will be combined to for an embryo and then that embryo will be implanted in the surrogate mother who will carry it to the term and give birth. The easier way is to contact some agency which provide the treatment and start your journey. They will be responsible to provide legal safety and best surrogate mothers etc. Good luck!

  12. Well, that’s a good decision. I think it’s pretty fine for you. Just go for it! It’s fine. I mean, we are personally looking for it forward as a Catholic too. So, I can understand your reservations. That’s how it goes! But, still having a child is really important, I believe. Meet someone who has had it before. You’ll change your mind! BLESS YOU. 🙂

    • I’m with you. Surrogacy is blessing for the thousands of infertile couples. It gives the chance to build families. Moreover couples can have their biologically related kids through this means which is awesome. Even though a woman cannot use her own eggs for some reason – it’s still possible to use donor’s. This way preserving at least male partner’s genetics in the baby. Just wonderful option to use!

  14. Justin & Taylor what I should say to you. it all depends upon your religious culture. If you think you can feel better with it, then go for it. otherwise, find alternate of it. surrogacy is a process of giving birth using a surrogate mother. You have to take help from a third party. Multiple clinics have now opened. They are offering their remarkable services. Two types of surrogacy are there. First one is about a traditional surrogacy and the second one is gestational surrogacy. sperms and eggs are fertilized outside the worm in a laboratory under clinical methods. After that, it is transferred to a surrogate women worm. You have to wait until baby growth properly. At the delivery time, you can go with your newborn kid to your country or your house. But it is a costly procedure. Think several times before adopting this method.

  15. We passed surrogacy in Ukraine. Here’s the outline on how the process goes:
The initial consultation is to be scheduled at least 1 week ahead and contains the following activities: A set of tests depending on the program.
Consultation with a fertility specialist who will be in charge of your program. In case of stimulation your wife will need to have the transvaginal ultrasound check done.
Before any initial consultation you will receive the Guidelines for the Initial Consultation. failure to follow these recommendations may affect the initial consultation in a negative way.
After you sign contracts, the medical team starts the selection process that includes:
Initial pre-selection by the local coordinator. Consultation of the fertility specialist in the clinic. Consultation of a psychologist. Legal consultation and verification of documents. Screening for possible addictions (urine and blood tests).
This check-up process, including all necessary tests and exams, takes about 1 month.
The cycle of egg donor or the biological mother is synchronised with the cycle of a surrogate mother. According to your contract you have to follow all doctors instruction. In case of self-treatment or violation of the treatment protocol, the clinic may cancel the cycle and terminate the contract. The date of the pick up is scheduled by the doctor in charge of the program.
The Intended Parents are informed about it beforehand..
If the Intended Parents wish to use previously frozen sperm sample for fertilisation they shall notify the program coordinator. In case the biological mother undergoes hormonal stimulation and is being prepared for egg retrieval, the second visit may take up to 10 days.
The rules for sperm donation are similar as for the initial consultation – a man needs to abstain from ejaculation from 3 to 5 days before. After fertilisation the embryo development is monitored by our embryology unit. The embryo transfer takes place on the 3rd/5th day depending on the clinic. You will usually receive the protocol of embryo cultivation and transfer within 3 working days after the embryo transfer. The HCG test takes place 2 weeks after the embryo transfer. The surrogate mother has her test in the clinic. The results of the test are known the day after the test. The first ultrasound scan is carried out in 2 weeks after the positive HCG test by the doctor in charge of the program. The report will be send the same or the next day after the check.
What you can expect during pregnancy monitorying:
Monthly ultrasound checks from the 12th week of pregnancy. Reports along with video and/or pictures will be send the same or the next day. For trisomy screenings, results will be send within 5 working days. Trisomy 13, 18, 21 – on the 12th week of pregnancy. Trisomy 18, 21 – on the 16th week of pregnancy. When your surrogate mother is going for planned hospitalisation your program coordinator will let you know. As a rule if the delivery is in a natural way the baby will be discharged in 3-4 days from the maternity house. In case of twins or c-section it might take up to 7 days for the babies to stay in the maternity house. In case of premature birth or any complications, the baby(s) obviously stay in the hospital for a longer period.
Hope this helps to get more insight.

  16. Just a couple of things to add. If your contract is Standard – you will be visiting the baby during the daytime. If your contract is VIP Surrogacy – you will be staying in the hospital with a baby in a separate room.
In order to obtain the birth certificate you will need to have your marriage certificate apostilled in the country that issued that marriage certificate. For countries that are not participants of the Hague Convention, abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Apostille convention) – the marriage certificate should be legalised. Apostille is not the same as legalisation.
If the name on your marriage certificate differs in any way from the name on your passport (e.g. there is a middle name on one or not the other, or surnames differ) – you need to obtain an official intermediate document confirming your identity. Failure to provide such document may cause your process delay. Your program coordinator will advise you with all such issues.
In order to obtain the birth certificate both intended parents need to be present in the country
The birth certificate will be submitted for apostillation, translation and notarisation.
After the birth certificate is obtained the embassy process starts
The clinic provides you full documentary support of the exit process
The embassy process differs for every country, so the waiting time is different for every particular case
Some of the Embassies will require additional DNA test performed on their premises – this additional DNA test is not covered by the clinic
It is recommend that you agree all of your actions associated with the exit process with your program coordinator.
Wishing you all the very best with your research.

  17. I agree with above posters, Ukraine has become quite a popular surrogacy destination. Commercial surrogacy is legal in the Ukraine. But it is only available to married heterosexual couples!! Couples also have to demonstrate that they require surrogacy. They have to provide suitable evidence such as the absence or deformation of the uterus to include adhesions or scar tissue. Risk to the health of the mother or potential child through pregnancy or by providing evidence of having 4 failed IVF attempts. The IP of a child born through surrogacy are considered to be biological parents from the moment of conception. They are specifically named as biological parents in the birth certificate without any mentioning of the surrogate mother. Importantly the gestational surrogate has no legal claim over the child!! Also no specific permission from any regulatory body is required. However written informed consent of all parties participating in the surrogacy program is mandatory! Unlike the US and Canada, babies born through surrogacy in Ukraine do not gain Ukrainian citizenship!
The process is not without confusing moments. Things to consider are: #1 English is not widely spoken in the Ukraine. This can make it difficult for the IP to navigate their way through all aspects of the journey. It can also make for a very complicated journey legally, where all correspondence, documents and agreements have to be translated through a professional service. It is advisable to get an English speaking lawyer in Ukraine to represent you. (Unless the service is included into the package price). #2 It is important that the intended parent’s name, particularly the intended mother’s name, is exactly the same on both passport and marriage certificates. Any discrepancy can lead to time delays as translation, notarisation and apostillization of the documents will be required. #3 In total you can expect to pay about €40k for a surrogacy arrangement in Ukraine. This may or may not include a guaranteed take home baby package (Which will cover the cost of all the IVF attempts until you achieve a pregnancy.) You should also budget for flights and general living expenses, taking into account that you may have to stay there for up to 6 weeks post birth. (Angain, if it’s not included into the package price).
I hope this information is helpful.

  18. Infertility is painful enough without adding guilt and shame to the mix. It is so important not to quantify our pain, and compare it to others. So try not to judge yourself for your pain at this early stage. What you are experiencing is a very valid, deep pain that only those on this side of the fence can truly understand… I had to go the surrogacy route. It is very difficult to accept and move on knowing your genes will are to be saved through lab works. I knew I still would have a child with my features..We were successful from the first attempt with a Ukrainian clinic. Of course we don’t accept this at once so that we take time needed but finally get there. I’m praying for everyone’s luck whatever your paths would be.

  20. After numerous failed IVF rounds it’s more likely one will need third part help. I mean the surrogate who’ll carry the baby for you. Moreover, if you’ve already tried with both own and donor egg and got no luck. So probably the problem is not in the embryo quality. The problem’s in the lining or some other factor. Anyway, you shouldn’t blame yourself. Too often even a Dr cannot state the accurate reason why IVF shot fails. You may get many healthy eggs. Perfect swimmers. You may get just the appropriate medications dosage. You may have just pefect treatment protocol. and finally fail for no stated reason. It happens ’cause not everything depends on us. and there are so many things we cannot rule over. IVF is like a gamble though. It’s always better to look for some ”guaranteed” plans. At least those cover you from the money loss. My advice also is to look onto surrogacy as the option. Wishing you all the best.
