Gay male couples are the family structure that most often applies to become parents through surrogacy, as they lack the biological ability to become pregnant and carry a baby until birth. Turning to a gestational carrier is therefore their only option to have a baby and share a genetic link with him. However, it should be clear that same-sex male couples are not the only family type that turns to surrogacy to start a family.
On the other hand, lesbian couples (same-sex female couples) rarely turn to surrogacy. As it is only obvious, it is uncommon for two women to have problems carrying a pregnancy to term.
