Even though there are no regulations governing surrogacy at a federal level in the United States, there exist a series of guidelines supported by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and other specialists when it comes to selecting a prospective surrogate mother:
- Being above the legal age
- Having at least one own child
- Being mentally prepared for the surrogacy process
- Agreeing with signing a contract with the IPs
