Follicles are the structures where eggs grow. As follicular development progresses, part of the follicles degenerates and part continues to evolve, but only one of them will reach the final stage of maturation, which means ovulation.
After releasing the mature egg (ovulation), the follicle becomes the corpus luteum, necessary to maintain the production of progesterone during pregnancy.
