Although there is no US state that forbids or bans surrogacy arrangements completely, the states included in this map present a wide range of limitations that make them totally unadvisable.
For example, in Louisiana, only married straight couples are allowed to have a baby via surrogacy, while Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Washington only allow altruistic surrogacy arrangements.
As for Michigan, New York, and Washington, entering into a commercial gestational surrogacy agreement is considered to be a criminal offence, and is punishable by imprisonment.
