Functioning of the immune system

The immune system is made up of different cell types that perform different functions to protect the body.

Some of these functions are the following:

• T-lymphocytes recognize the body's own cells thanks to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
• B-lymphocytes are responsible for producing antibodies.
• Natural Killer cells destroy cells infected by foreign bodies.

In autoimmune diseases, the immune system is unable to differentiate what is proper from what is foreign, so it creates antibodies to attack the body's own tissues.
