The female reproductive system develops from the fusion of the Müllerian ducts during embryo development. The septum that separates them disappears eventually as well.

If alterations of any kind occur during their development in the fetus, the woman will develop an anomaly in the uterus, such as uterus didelphis, septate or bicornuate uterus, among others.
