There are different tests that can evaluate a woman's reproductive status. The following are the most common tests used to diagnose female infertility or sterility:
- Vaginal ultrasound
- for the evaluation of the state of the ovaries and the uterus. In addition, a count of the antral follicles can be performed to determine the woman's ovarian reserve.
- Hormonal analysis
- of the levels of LH, FSH, estradiol, progesterone and AMH (anti-mullerian hormone). These hormones are considered to be the most important ones to assess the condition of the ovaries and pituitary gland.
- Hysterosalpingography
- diagnostic test to examine the uterine cavity and the permeability of the fallopian tubes.
- Caryotype
- genetic test to identify possible alterations at chromosome level.
The doctor will order the different tests for the study of female fertility based on each individual patient. It must be taken into account that an abnormal result in any of these tests will require other complementary tests to be performed.
