In ICSI's reproductive technique, it is the embryologist who introduces the sperm directly into the cytoplasm of the ovum. Therefore, only one living sperm is needed, regardless of whether or not it has mobility or shows certain morphological problems.
Therefore, this technique is applied in cases of severe male infertility and when oocytes have a low quality. It is also common to resort to ICSI when conventional IVF fails and when PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) is made.
