Surrogacy in Japan is not legally permitted, although it is also not prohibited. In general, it is stated that any contract for surrogacy will be legally non-binding, that it is forbidden to compensate the surrogate mother financially and that, in addition, she could keep the baby and refuse to consent to the adoption.
