What is a surrogate mother?

A surrogate mother, surrogate or gestational carrier (GC) is a woman who offers herself to carry a baby for someone else who cannot conceive or carry a pregnancy naturally.

Broadly speaking, surrogates are young, healthy women who have had at least one successful pregnancy in the past.
